We started by sketching out what we wanted to make as a print, then we transferred onto a piece of linoleum, which is similar to rubber. Once we transferred the sketch over we traced the image in sharpie so the pencil lead wouldn't rub off. Then we began to cut, only cut out what you want to be left white. We used a cutting tool with exchangeable tips, each tip varied, depending on what width and depth cut you wanted to make.
In my piece I incorporated lines by cutting out the wrinkles of the elephant, forming the shape and texture of the elephant. In my project I believe that the outline if the elephant was the best aspect, but I would like to improve the texture making it look more wrinkles rather than stripes. The concept of this piece was love, love is one of the most important things in life. Everyone deserves it and everyone needs it. In my opinion, the neatness of the arrangement of hearts to form the words was the most successful thing about this project. Starting the project I thought it word would be hard to decipher from randomly sized hearts, but it turned out very different than I imagined. The only thing I would change is adding more color, the color of the paper fades into the color of the wall we used. I think painting the hearts with acrylic paint would have been better than outlining the edges in marker.
The idea of place was a picture of the view from my uncles lake house. Every summer my immediate family and I would drive up to Michigan to visit my uncle and aunt. Some of my favorite childhood memories were made there, within the last year or so they sold the house and move down here to NC. I thought making this piece would be a good remembrance of those summers, because we would never have another. I think the reflection of the tree line was the most successful detail of my painting, while the light in the sky was what I needed more time to paint. Instead of having the light spread across the sky I centered it in one general area. For this piece I thought it would be better to use watercolor because it was more based on general shape rather than smaller details, like the acrylic painting posted below.
My still life piece includes objects that represent me. One item being a "Yesterdog" baseball hat, Yesterdog is a hot-dog place in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which is where I'm from. My second item is my Captain America t-shirt, I've always loved marvel superheroes but Captain America has been my favorite. I also chose a book, because on my free time I love to read, I specifically chose that book because I wanted to practice painting fonts and even letters. Finally, I decided to paint earphones, because music is very important to me and thought it would be an interesting item to try to paint. In my opinion the most successful aspect of my painting is the spine of the book, including the letters and the highlights, but if I could change one thing about my painting I'd like to change the angle of which I painted the captain america t-shirt since it doesn't match the picture as well as I had hoped. For this piece I decided to use acrylic paint because it was easier to correct mistakes due to the intricate detail of this work.
